On June 12 in Dong Thap, the agricultural sector held a launching ceremony for the Sustainable Development Project of 1 million hectares specializing in high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation, associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta region.

The launching ceremony of the 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice project was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) in collaboration with the Dong Thap Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Dong Thap's first field participating in the project covers an area of 50 hectares, involving 24 rice farming households from Thang Loi Agricultural Service Cooperative (Lang Bien Commune, Thap Muoi District).

Farmers participating in the model receive 50% state support for material costs such as seeds, fertilizers, straw treatment products, machinery rental for seeding, and spraying equipment; the remaining 50% comes from socialization sources.

Mr. Nguyen Van Vu Minh, Director of Dong Thap Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, stated that the launch is the initial step to forming a specialized area for high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation; this is associated with reorganizing the production system according to the value chain and applying sustainable farming practices. This approach helps the local rice industry develop sustainably, enhances production efficiency, increases the income and livelihood of rice farmers, protects the environment, adapts to climate change, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

The ceremony also included the signing of a memorandum of understanding for production-consumption cooperation between Thang Loi Agricultural Service Cooperative and various service providers and businesses. Additionally, there was a symbolic mechanical rice sowing event.

In 2024, Dong Thap province aims to register 28,000 hectares into the 1 Million Hectares of High-Quality Rice Project, increasing to nearly 70,000 hectares in 2025, and reaching nearly 162,000 hectares by 2030.
