On December 26, the Viet Nam Disaster Management Authority (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) (MARD) held a meeting to summarize the work in 2020, implementing the key tasks in 2021.

According to Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Standing Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control Nguyen Xuan Cuong, 2020 is a typical year for weather anomalies. Evaluation of advisory work is very proactive and timely; However, Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong said that there were still many shortcomings in the implementation process, especially the search and rescue work.

As for forecasts, Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong assessed, overall is better than previous years. “The forecast of wind and storm intensity is very close to the reality”. The Minister commented: For the response and overcoming the natural disaster, it was according to the motto “4 on the spot” and done quite well.

Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong also frankly pointed out limitations in the work of rescue. Disaster incident response is not really professional. Along with that, we are still in short of equipment to support this work. “Organizing the response force requires better mobility and performance. In fact, the armed forces are very enthusiastic and aggressive, but overall coordination is needed”.

Emphasizing that in the coming time, climate change impacts will tend to be more and more extreme, abnormal, and damage caused by natural disasters over the past time will also be cumulative. In particular, the larger the scale of the economy, the more and more severe the damage will be. Therefore, Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong suggested central ministries, localities and the whole community should have the best preparation to actively respond to all natural disaster situations.
