On April 5, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) held a regular press conference for the first quarter of 2019.

At the press conference, Mr. Le Van Thanh, Chief of the Ministry Office said, the growth rate of the whole agriculture sector production value in the first quarter was estimated at 2.69% compared to the first quarter of 2018; in which agriculture increased by 1.93%, forestry increased by 4.32% and fisheries increased by 5.24%. GDP of agriculture in the first quarter was estimated at 2.68%; in which, agriculture increased by 1.84%, forestry increased by 4.2%, fishery increased by 5.1%.

In the field of rice export, according to Mr. Le Thanh Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Processing and Trade for Agro-Forestry-Fisheries product,  , the Plant Protection Department has recently made a evaluation report on  the capacity of rice exporting enterprises for Chinese Customs. Hopefully, after Chinese Customs approves the enterprises, the situation of rice exports to this market will grow and stabilize in the coming time.

Besides, in the coming time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will negotiate rice export quotas into Korea. Indonesia announced that rice reserves will run out in June, therefore, in the third and fourth quarter, this market is expected to increase rice imports. The Philippines market has opened negotiations for import contracts. With such signals, rice exports are expected to flourish.

China, the largest fruit and vegetable exporter of Vietnam in the near future will have some changes in import these commodities. However, the Plant Protection Department has actively granted plantation codes, supporting packers, basically meeting the requirements of the Chinese market.

Permanent Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Ha Cong Tuan said that in the first quarter of 2019, agricultural growth was 2.68%. On average, in the first quarter of the last 5 years, the industry growth reached 1.95%. Therefore, growth in the first quarter of this year is not the highest but also quite high. The markets are always the most important and decisive issues for the industry’s development.

Permanent Deputy Minister Ha Cong Tuan added, besides, preparing for the rainy and flood season, the agricultural sector faces drought in the Central Highlands, saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta ... In the short term, the agricultural sector has had solutions.

Mr Ha Cong Tuan emphasized that the agricultural sector was determined to achieve 3% growth in 2019.
