Information from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) shows that after many months of interruption and stagnation due to the influence of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, seafood exports from Vietnam to Russia have started to gain momentum for positive recovery.

Specifically, at the end of February 2022, the Russia-Ukraine conflict began, shortly after that, Vietnam’s seafood exports to Russia in March and April 2022 decreased by 86% and 46% respectively because of the congestion in transportation and difficult trade payments.

At that time, businesses exporting to Russia said that many orders had to be returned, the payment faced many risks. Supply chains for production and import and export are broken. Enterprises are forced to find ways to handle inventory or export to other markets.

However, from May, seafood exports to Russia recovered gradually and from July began to reverse, increasing by 36% and increasing sharply by 98% in August. Generally in the first eight months of 2022, Vietnam’s seafood exports to Russia reached over 94 million USD (down 20% compared to the same period in 2021).

Ms. Le Hang, Deputy Director of the Center for Training and Trade Promotion, VASEP, said that in 8 months, Tra fish was still the most exported item, accounting for 22% of seafood export turnover to the Russian market with a value of nearly 21 million USD (down 12% compared to the same period in 2021); in which, frozen Tra fish fillets account for about 75%, whole Tra fish accounts for 14%, and cut fish accounts for 11%.

Exports of whiteleg shrimp, grilled fish  and surimi all decreased by more than 50% over the same period last year; In which, whiteleg shrimp exports reached over 16 million USD, accounting for 17%, surimi and grilled fish  exports reached over 12 million USD, accounting for 13%.
