At the conference, many delegates proposed to increase fines for violations of illegal fishing. Representatives of the Vietnam Marine Police Command proposed a stronger sanction for illegal fishing vessels and fishermen.
Speaking at the conference, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong emphasized that Vietnam is a country with 28 coastal provinces out of 63 cities and provinces, Vietnam has long established economic profession, exploitation and trade of seafood, making an important contribution to the export of the agricultural sector in general and at the same time bringing profit to coastal localities.
In terms of the EC recommendations for Vietnam's seafood harvest to ensure sustainable exploitation, Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong said: “Positively, we see it as an opportunity. These recommendations coincide with our determination to build sustainable fisheries. The EU has also recorded Vietnam's achievements. Accordingly, violations of illegal fishing in the Pacific island nation no longer exist; and Vietnam has perfected a large part of the legal framework”.
In Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong’s opinion the key task in the coming time, , is to continue to effectively implement the guiding documents of the Government and the Fisheries Law, focusing on the contents related to against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing; strengthening patrol, inspection and supervision of law enforcement; detecting, preventing in time and strictly handling illegal fishing vessels and fishermen; synchronizing VN-FISHBASE fisheries database in May, 2019. Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong also proposed that 28 coastal provinces and cities should urgently complete the issuance of quota licenses for fishing vessel before July 2019, seriously revoke licenses of fishing vessel involved in IUU fishing.
