The visit of Deputy Minister Hoàng Trung aimed to expedite market access for certain fruits that Vietnam has a competitive advantage in exporting; enhance cooperation between the two Ministries in the field of plant protection; and promote technical cooperation and investment in sustainable agricultural production with reduced emissions.
During the meetings, both sides expressed their pleasure at the approval for the export of U.S. peaches/nectarines to the Vietnamese market. They also made significant progress in market access for several other fruits from both countries. Specifically, the two sides agreed on the technical requirements for Vietnamese passion fruit and took another step forward in the review process for U.S. mandarins.
Both sides agreed to conclude technical discussions and proceed to legal procedures to allow the import of Vietnamese passion fruit; initiate the review process for new Vietnamese products, including seedless limes, guava, and jackfruit; and agreed on the pest lists and the next steps in the review process for U.S. mandarins, plums, lemons, pomegranates, and several other products intended for plant propagation in the U.S.
To support the growth momentum and market share of Vietnamese agricultural, forestry, and fishery products, Deputy Minister Hoàng Trung expressed his hope that the U.S. Department of Agriculture would have an appropriate voice in consultations related to trade defense cases concerning Vietnamese agricultural, forestry, and fishery products, particularly regarding wood, warm-water shrimp, and honey. The U.S. side acknowledged the trade significance of these items for stabilizing the livelihoods of farmers and the legitimate interests of Vietnamese businesses.
