At the meeting, Minister Le Minh Hoan thanked the World Bank for the effective support and funding for Vietnam’s agriculture and rural development in the past time through technical assistance and investment projects in rural areas of Vietnam.
According to Minister Le Minh Hoan, immediately after the 13th National Party Congress, Vietnam has positioned its agricultural development goal towards ecological and responsible sustainable agriculture. Vietnam is shifting from agricultural production thinking to agricultural economic thinking, creating a multi-value combination.
The Minister suggested that the WB continue to support policy advice, strategies, and deeper institutional reforms for the agricultural sector towards a sustainable agricultural transformation as in the WB’s Vietnam Development Report 2016. Priority orientations include fisheries, food safety, adaptation to climate change (focusing on coastal provinces and the Mekong Delta); natural disaster prevention works; safety of dams and essential irrigation infrastructure for production; clean water, sanitation, rural environment, higher education.
Ms. Carolyn Turk, WB Country Director in Vietnam, said: The WB has been a close partner with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for the past 25 years and this relationship will grow stronger in the coming time. The WB is willing to work with the Ministry in designing and financing programs with larger goals and objectives, such as low-carbon agriculture, strengthening coastal resilience, rural clean water, and water security and wastewater management. Each program should have strong private sector involvement to scale up and enhance sustainability.
